Lyrics

He strums an easy rhythm,
fingers casual on the strings
His ragged voice entices
with the ballads that he sings

Songs of rogues and ruffians,
of heartbreak and betrayal
Love lost or stolen,
tears to no avail
And his haunted eyes reflect
the gleam of truth in every tale

From THE MAN BEHIND THE SONG

He spys her in the audience,
listening to him play
Her young face glows,
her eyes drift closed,
her body starts to sway

She begins to hum in harmony,
so soft and low and sweet
A simple counter melody
to make the song complete
He knows he’ll sing it with her,
but he’ll never let her meet

THE MAN BEHIND THE SONG

For the shadows in his heart are dark and long

And the devils deep inside of him are strong

Surrounded by his demons,
he’s surrendered to their power

He's locked himself away inside a dark and distant tower

Ringed by thorns and thistles that can strangle any flower

That comes along

He knows just how to play this show;
he’s very well rehearsed
And he really couldn’t say
if he’s been blessed or he’s been cursed

For the beauty in his ballads
comes from solitude he’s known
Friendship faded, trust betrayed, wounded love that’s flown
And loneliness is just the price
he pays to be alone
